How to Search Virginia Beach Court Records
Virginia Beach court records live in the Virginia judiciary's online systems. The starting point is the state Case Status and Information page. It links the statewide Online Case Information System (OCIS), the General District Court Case Information system, Circuit Court Case Information, and a JDR payment search. OCIS covers adult criminal cases in JDR, criminal and traffic cases in the General District Court, and select Circuit Court cases. It does not take payments.
Choose the system that matches your case. Pull together the full name as it appears on the summons or warrant, the case number if you have it, and the court name. The last name is required for a name search, and names must be at least two characters.
- Open the state Case Status and Information page and pick a portal by record type.
- For a General District Court search, select "Virginia Beach General District Court" before you search.
- Choose Name Search, Case Number Search, or Hearing Date Search.
- Enter the search terms and submit. Fix any error the portal flags, such as a short name or a bad case number.
- Open a result to view case number, parties, charges, hearing dates, and disposition.
- For documents or certified copies, contact the Clerk that holds the file.
Each system has a clear lane. Circuit Court Case Information covers civil and criminal cases in participating Circuit Courts and lets you search by locality, name, case number, or hearing date. The General District Court system handles civil, criminal, and traffic cases, and it is the one that takes online payments for prepayable charges. The JDR payment search covers eligible juvenile and domestic relations payments, though juvenile case detail stays confidential. For deeds, judgments, and recorded wills, the Clerk's Secure Remote Access to Land Records is a separate, registered system rather than a free public portal.
For court-date lookups, see the Virginia Beach court dockets page. For criminal case detail, see the arrest records page.
Most local searches run through the General District Court online case information system once you pick Virginia Beach.

This system takes online payments for prepayable charges and returns the case number, parties, charges, and disposition for each match.
Virginia Beach Court Records Search Fields
The statewide OCIS search uses a small set of fields. The defaults open on a name search across adult criminal and traffic cases, but you can switch the search type and the court level. The table below lists the main fields and how they behave.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes / Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search By | Segmented control | Yes | Name, Case Number, or Hearing Date; Name is the default |
| Court Level | Multi-select | No | All levels by default; Circuit, General District, and JDR available |
| Courts | Multi-select | No | All courts by default, or pick Virginia Beach |
| Name | Text | Yes (name search) | Two or more characters required |
| Case Number | Text | Yes (case search) | Invalid formats are rejected |
| Hearing Date | Date / range | Yes (date search) | A valid date or range is required |
If a search is rejected, first confirm a court is selected, then confirm the name has at least two characters or the case number fits the court's format. The General District Court system uses similar fields after you select Virginia Beach.
Types of Virginia Beach Court Records
Virginia Beach court records cover the full range of trial-court matters. The Circuit Court keeps court-of-record files for serious and high-value cases, while the district courts keep the larger volume of traffic, misdemeanor, and family files.
Common record types include the following.
- Criminal cases - felonies in Circuit Court; misdemeanors and preliminary hearings in General District Court.
- Civil cases - warrants in debt, complaints, judgments, garnishments, and liens.
- Family cases - divorce and adoption in Circuit Court; custody and support in JDR.
- Probate and estate files - wills, qualifications, inventories, and accounts kept by the Clerk.
- Land records and judgments - deeds, plats, UCC filings, and judgment records.
Juvenile files are confidential and are not searched like ordinary public records. They are handled by the JDR Clerk with proper identification.
Land records and judgments make up a large share of the Clerk's permanent files. The Circuit Court Clerk records, indexes, and stores deeds, plats, and judgment records for the whole city, along with UCC financing statements, military discharge forms, and assumed business names. These are the records people pull for a title search, a lien check, or proof of a recorded judgment. Many of them are available through the Clerk's land-record system, while others are viewed at the public counter.
What Virginia Beach Court Records Show
A case record holds the facts the court tracks from filing through disposition. The fields below appear on most public Virginia case screens. The system masks birth dates and withholds protected identifiers such as Social Security and driver's license numbers.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Case Number | The court-assigned ID; the format depends on the court and division |
| Court / Locality | Virginia Beach Circuit, General District, or JDR Court |
| Case Type | Civil, criminal, traffic, divorce, probate, or domestic relations |
| Parties | Plaintiff and defendant, or Commonwealth and defendant |
| Charge / Cause | Offense date, code, description, and statute where shown |
| Hearing | Hearing date, time, type, and courtroom when set |
| Disposition | Dismissed, nolle prosequi, guilty, not guilty, or appealed |
| Financial | Fines, court costs, restitution, and bond |
The public portals are case-information tools, not document libraries. They generally do not let you download pleadings or orders.
Each search system also offers a data-status choice of Current, Archived, or All. Search Current first for active and recent matters. Switch to Archived for older cases, and use All when you are not sure. Older records may still need a call or a visit to the Clerk, because the online index does not always reach back as far as the paper file. The court does not publish a fixed archive cutoff, so treat an empty Current search as a prompt to widen the data status rather than proof that nothing exists.
Public Access Framework for Virginia Beach Court Records
Court records in Virginia are presumed open unless a statute makes them confidential. The key court-record statute, Va. Code § 17.1-208, opens nonconfidential court records to inspection and copying at the Clerk's office. It also blocks the Clerk from releasing protected identifiers. Land records and other remote-access files are defined by Va. Code § 17.1-292, and secure remote access to land records needs registration with the Circuit Court Clerk.
Anyone can search the public case portals at no charge. For copies, the Clerk charges per sheet, and certified copies cost more. Some records, like the Clerk's land-record images, require a registered account rather than the open portal. City agency records, such as police reports, go through the City of Virginia Beach FOIA process under Va. Code § 2.2-3704, not the court Clerk.
Note: A court order, certified divorce decree, or case file comes from the court Clerk, while city agency records come through the city FOIA office.
Records That Are Sealed or Confidential in Virginia Beach
Several record types stay out of public view. Juvenile court files are confidential under state law. Adoption records are sealed. Protective orders, civil commitments, and emergency custody or temporary detention matters are excluded from the General District Court online system. Sealed and expunged criminal records drop out of public access once relief is granted.
To view a sealed file, a person usually must be a party, an attorney of record, or an authorized agency, or must get a court order. Virginia expungement is filed in the Circuit Court and applies mainly to acquittals, dismissals, and mistaken-identity cases. The newer sealing law adds automatic and petition-based paths that phase in by date. The Virginia Beach arrest records page walks through both.
A missing online result does not always mean no record exists. Some files are confidential, some are too old for the online index, and some have been removed under a sealing or expungement order. Even an eviction case can drop off the public record. A dismissed or nonsuited unlawful detainer action may be expunged from public view under state law, which is why a property search can come back empty. When the stakes are high, confirm with the Clerk in person rather than trusting a blank screen.
In-Person Court Record Requests
When the online portal does not show enough, visit the Clerk. The Circuit Court Clerk's Office keeps court-of-record files and can make plain or certified copies. Bring the case number or party names and a payment method. The office does not accept legal filings or official correspondence by email or fax, so plan to mail or appear in person.

Federal cases are separate. Virginia Beach sits in the Eastern District of Virginia, so federal dockets are searched through PACER and the U.S. District Court, with appeals at the Fourth Circuit.
The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia handles federal civil and criminal matters tied to the Virginia Beach area.

Use this court for federal trial-level cases that would not appear in the state Virginia Beach court records portals.
Federal appeals move up to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, which posts its dockets, opinions, and filing rules online.

If a Virginia Beach federal case is appealed, the Fourth Circuit is the next stop above the district court.
To pull the actual federal case file, you register with PACER federal case access, the paid system that serves both courts above.

PACER charges per page but is the standard way to see dockets and documents in any federal case touching Virginia Beach.
